Nousb is a great service for easily transferring files between people and devices. You might wonder, "What's so special about this service when there are already so many file-sharing options available?" Well, there are several reasons, but most importantly, it's free and prioritizes maximum privacy. You can share a file, close the tab, and every trace will disappear, forever.
Here at Pudding Studio, we love Reddit, and /r/sideproject is one of the most inspiring communities for us. The number of great ideas in their early stages is enormous. We stumbled so many times upon something with a huge potential to become a widely-used product.
This is how we stumbled upon a project called nousb, which has a primary focus on providing a quick and easy way to share files. What caught our attention is the fact that user privacy is the main pillar of the service. As soon as the user closes the nousb tab in their browser, all the content is permanently deleted, for the sender, the receivers, and for everyone, including nousb. Forever.
We realized that there is room for improvement both in the brand image and the product itself, so we reached out to post OP and this is how the redesign started.
We decided to take the hackathon route in the design process. We gave ourselves 72 hours to conduct research, rebrand the service, and redesign the app. After 72 hours, we delivered a new visual identity along with basic brand guidelines (that are easy to upgrade), a marketing landing page, and all major app screens.

We didn’t just focus on the visual aspects, but also worked on messaging and introduced a new name for the service. “nousb” will undergo a transition and hopefully become a “pooortal”. The main reason is that “nousb” implies that the service is only about transferring files, but it is much more than that. At the moment, “nousb” also has a chat option, which has already opened the door to introducing new features in the future.
The app is where all the magic happens, so we redesigned it to look, feel, and work magically. We polished the design to follow the brand and visual guidelines. In addition, we tweaked the user experience to make the app easier to navigate, invite, share, and track your files and transfer sizes. The entire browser viewport provides the necessary space to keep everything in one spot without distractions, including ads.
In order to implement the changes smoothly and quickly, we focused on reskinning the already functional and working app. A few tweaks to the app's user experience (UX) segments made it easier for users to navigate and share their files. The first task on our reskinning list was to have the app utilize the entire browser viewport, which will make converting the web app into a desktop app much easier.
